Do you have a morning ritual? I have a new one and, so far, it seems to be helping me start my days off on the right foot.
Watch this short (1:41) video. In addition to proposing an interesting morning ritual, it has a satisfying ASMR quality that is surprisingly soothing to watch. The gist of the idea: start your day with a fresh, hot cup of coffee, then strip away the inputs. No music, no reading, no screens—basically, avoid the media we’ve been conditioned to consume the second our eyes open.
What do you do next? Just sit quietly with your thoughts for as long as it takes to finish your coffee in a leisurely fashion. I’ve been doing this for a few mornings now, and I really appreciate starting my day this way. Screens give our brains an excuse not to think, and this forces you in the opposite direction.
I emerge from these sessions with ideas, much like the way a walk in the woods often sparks creativity. The same dynamic is at work: you’re left alone with your mind, free from attention magnets.
After that, the next step in my morning is a ten-minute journaling session. By then, I usually have a few fresh ideas ready to capture.
Though I’ve tried in the past, I’ve never managed to establish a regular meditation practice. Yet this feels like what I imagine meditation to be, albeit in a less structured form. You don’t have to close your eyes (though you can), and the results feel very similar: tranquility, clarity of thought, and a sense of peace. Plus, you really savor your coffee in a way you completely miss while doomscrolling.
Do you have a morning ritual of your own, or would you give this quiet coffee routine a try?
